Coco Calling No.235 - The Best Thing That Happened Today

Have you noticed how parrots tend to be optimists and humans are often pessimists? I’ve commented in the past about how ‘human’ news is always about bad things, and how so many humans seem to strut around each day with negative thoughts in their heads. Of course, one solution would be for them all to have surgery (like my owner’s wife) to remove the negative bits from their brains. But that’s a bit drastic. And there is another way, -the parrot way!

Every single day, I like to stop and think about the best thing that’s happened to me. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of my stunning feathers in the mirror. Or I discover a succulent chilli deep down in the dregs of my food pot. And there are days when I count my blessings for having food, shelter, comfort and even love in my life. Yes, my human family and I all enjoy a very special relationship. We’re a special, close-knit flock, and I give thanks for that. And yet, I still have something in my life which surpasses all of these things….

You see, I know that I’m a part of God’s creation and that He cares for me. And I know that irrespective of what this life may throw at me, one day, I’ll live a life of endless perfection in Heaven. We all will, if we allow God into our lives. And this isn’t something that I simply hope or think; no, it’s a whole lot more than that. It’s a ‘knowing.’ A knowing that has taken a great many years to evolve inside me and which I will never lose. And this means that I have a very real, genuine reason to celebrate each passing day, because every day that I live with God in my heart, I have the best thing of all in my life.

“Instead of pursuing happiness, pursue God, and happiness will find you, deep in your soul.”

(Leila Grandemange: [Dates unknown]: Current American author)

“Joy is the happiness that doesn’t depend on what happens.” (David Steindl-Rast: [1926 – present]: American Catholic Benedictine Monk, author and lecturer).

“The best way for me to show gratitude to God is to accept everything, even my problems, with joy.”

(Mother Teresa: [1910-1997]: Albanian Catholic nun who dedicated her life to serving the poor and destitute of Calcutta, India and elsewhere. She was posthumously made a saint in 2016).

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ.”

(1 Thessalonians 5:18)
