Coco Calling No.237 - Food For the Soul

Humans often ask me what I like to eat each day. Well, I have a very varied diet. I like seeds and nuts and berries and chillies. I’m also quite partial to the odd piece of furniture or occasional door frame0000000000000. And I’ve been known to mount a raid on the dog bowls and fly off with their special biscuits. In fact, I seem to eat most things, and the other evening, I spent a wonderful hour licking out the remnants of an ice cream tub. Yes, that was a case of head down, tail up, as I enjoyed every single lick!

I could so easily become a very fat parrot, and there are times when I have to remind myself that we should all eat to live, instead of living to eat. Excess, greed and extravagance so rarely bring us joy. And it’s probably not a great idea if I stuff my stomach full of food but ignore the hunger of my soul. That restless, spiritual yearning that burns so deep within.

When Jesus ate with others, He not only ate a physical meal, but He nourished the souls of those around Him. And that’s just what I need. It’s what we all need. So I’m going to eat some ‘Humble Pie,’ and enjoy a more healthy and balanced diet. Yes, with food for my stomach, and God’s spirit for my soul!

“There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty, -it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There’s a hunger for love as there is a hunger for God.”

(Mother Teresa: [1910 – 1997]: Catholic nun of Albanian origin who dedicated her life to helping the poor and needy of Calcutta, India, and elsewhere. She was posthumously canonised in 2016)

“What feeds the soul matters as much as what feeds the body.”

(Corrie ten Boon: [1892-1983]: Dutch Christian author and public speaker, and survivor of a World War 2 Nazi concentration camp.)

“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”

(John 6: 35)

“Jesus answered, ‘It is written: Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

(Matthew 4:4)
