My owner has to change my water pot every single day because I always make a mess in it. I like to put banana chips and nuts into my water to soften them, so that I often end up with a kind of glutenous soup. But being the very bright parrot that I am, I’ve found a way around this. Because whenever I’m out and about in the house, I’ve learnt that taps equal water. And even when the taps are turned off, I’m still able to push the washers up with my beak so that a droplet of water comes out whenever I want it. How about that then? Not just a pretty face!
And of course, the Gospels are full of imagery about water. Water cleanses and refreshes in much the same way as the Holy Spirit, and that’s why it’s called ‘The Water of Life.’ But there is one obvious difference here. Because there are no washers involved with the Holy Spirit. It’s always freely available to anyone and everyone that invites it in. And we all need to do that from time to time, to wash away our impurities and to purify our souls. And then you might just start to look as beautiful as me! (Well, almost).
“Just like as water ever seeks and fills the lowest place, so the moment God finds you abused and empty, His glory and power flow in.”
(Andrew Murray: [1828 – 1917]: South African writer, teacher and Christian pastor).
“Christians should live in the world, but not be filled with it. A ship lives in the water; but if the water gets into the ship, she goes to the bottom. So Christians may live in the world; but if the world gets into them, they sink.”
(Dwight L. Moody: [1837 – 1899]: American evangelist).
“Man is like a traveller who, crossing the deserts of life, has a thirst for living water, gushing and fresh, capable of quenching his deep desire for light, love, beauty and peace. We all feel this desire!”
(Pope Francis: [1936 – present]: Current Pope and Head of the Catholic Church)
“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
