Coco Calling No.284 - Election Fever!

Honestly! There are some occasions when humans get totally out of control, and this is one of them. British humans are about to have an election to choose a new political leader and party. And the racket they make about doing it is even worse than when our hedgehogs are mating on the back lawn!

Every few years, they repeat this same ritual, and it really does my head in. All kinds of weird and wonderful human monstrosities stand for election, all promising to deliver the earth.  A few months later, they and their policies are found to be flawed, and everyone gets very cross with them. Humans never seem to learn.

There is a fundamental problem here. Because so many humans worship image over substance. And when this happens, they become incapable of seeing the truth, and they end up getting disappointed. Image is so often a mask for hypocrisy, and that is when we can find ourselves heading into very dangerous territory. The Putins and Kim Jong Uns of this world are hypocrites. The words of ‘truth’ that they speak to their people are the polar opposite of reality, and their lives go on to become a self-serving lie. And neither is human business always squeaky clean. Too many project a positive image of themselves, when in fact, they are harming the planet or treating their workers very badly. Even the church has been guilty of hypocrisy throughout the ages; yes, hypocrisy is very much a human disease.

If hypocrisy were just a single fault, then things might not be quite so bad. But it isn’t. Hypocrisy is a multitude of failings ranging from deceit and dishonesty through to arrogance and self-interest. And as British humans go to vote, many of them are crying out for something so much better. They not only want politicians that are competent and fair, but they want politicians who will uphold traditional Christian values. Values of honesty, sincerity, integrity and humility which form the backbone of any fair society.

Maybe one day in the future, more humans will be discerning enough to look towards God and Jesus and the Christian code for their hopes and aspirations, and then persuade their politicians to do the same. Who can say? Because unless we allow the Holy Spirit to flow through us, things are unlikely to change. And human values and ideology rarely deliver contentment and joy. But what would a small parrot know about all this?

“Never underestimate the hypocrisy of politicians.”

(James Herbert: [1943-2013]: English horror writer)

“I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world.”

(Mother Teresa: [1910-1997]: Albanian-born Catholic nun who dedicated her life to helping the poor in India. She was posthumously made a Saint in 2016)

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

(Matthew 23:27-28)
